The most famous volcano in the Puys chain, the Puy de Dôme – in the background of the photo – rises to 4,806 feet (1,465 metres) and overlooks the other eighty volcanoes that make up the chain. This Pelean type volcano has no crater but a rounded top: the lava accumulated through successive eruptions and formed a dome. The huge volcanic edifice was built by breaking down or covering other older volcanoes, such as the small Puy de Dôme, on which it rests.
