0
The floppy-eared eel or puhi tari'a is deified by the Polynesians who interpret its presence in freshwater streams or fountains as a promise of life and abundance. 'Puhi' in Tahitian refers to the matrix (pū) from which springs (hī), i.e the matter, elements, beings. Dominant in Polynesian mythology, the floppy-eared eel also contributes to the purity of water by filtering it.
