Although Przewalski horses and domestic horses descend from a common ancestor and are closely related, Przewalski horses are not the direct ancestors of domestic horses. Przewalski horses indeed have sixty-six chromosomes compared to sixty-four for domestic horses and their mitochondrial DNA suggests that they descend from a distinct regional genetic group originating in the eastern part of the Eurasian steppes.
