The Roule mountain in Cherbourg offers an exceptional view of the city of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin and its harbor, the largest artificial harbor in Europe. Standing 557 feet (117 meters) high, the rocky promontory houses the Liberation Museum, built inside a former fort. This fort was occupied by the German army during the Second World War and then liberated by Allied forces on June 25, 1944. The first fortifications on the Montagne du Roule were built in 1793 to protect the harbor from possible British attacks.
