Built at an altitude of 4,790 ft (1,460 m) between 1722 and 1744, Fort Dauphin is located in front of the communication Y and had for mission to protect Fort des Têtes. After 1870, it was attached to the central nucleus as a second-line bastion structure to watch over the passage through the Durance valley. Fort Dauphin also housed part of the garrison in its barracks.
