Riquewihr is part of the Colmar-Ribeauvillé district. It stands in the heart of the vineyard, along the wine route in the Piedmont of the Vosges. Vines were already growing there in the 8th century. The city sits a the entrance of a valley bordered by a diverse forest to the west. The Schoenenbourg hill (650 ft / 198 m) is home to the vineyards to the north and slightly dominates the plains to the east and south-east. From a geological point of view, the Vosges' piedmont is composed of voltzia sandstone and marls.
