Natura 2000 is an ecological network bringing together various sites of the European Union. It comes under the “Birds” and “Habitats - Fauna - Flora” directives. Its objective is to preserve and ensure better knowledge of the biological diversity and its habitats on the sites it supervises. Madine Lake extends on 2,718 acres (1,100 ha) in the departments of Meuse (93%) and Meurthe-et-Moselle (7%) within the Lorraine Regional Nature Park. It is a Natura 2000 protected area since 2003.
