The tuff formation at the origin of the famous Tufs waterfall of Planches-près-Arbois in Jura is linked to the quantity of water, its limestone load and the presence of specific plant formations. Any biological or chemical modification being likely to completely alter this process, the protection of the biotope is essential. The Jura tuff waterfalls are therefore protected at the European level under the Habitats-Fauna-Flora Directive for the Natural Habitats under the ‘Petrifying springs with tuff formation’ appellation.
