The canal bank restoration and replanting program has led the VNF (Voies Navigables de France) to carry out inventories of the fauna and flora of the Canal du Midi. These inventories showed that the disappearance of the plane trees would cause the destruction of protected species’ habitats, among them birds and bats. Various nesting boxes and lodges have therefore been installed along the canal and in its surroundings. They aim to prevent these species from suffering from the felling of plane trees.
