The particular geomorphology and climate of Mont Ventoux make it a rich environmental site with a fragile biological balance. As such, the massif was listed as a Biosphere Reserve in 1990 by UNESCO and several central areas - the limestone scree area of the Ventoux summit, the mixture of forests and mountain pastures of Mont Serein, the Bédoin cedar grove, the Tête de l'Émine, or the Nesque gorges - have been determined over a total area of 5,253 acres (2,126 ha) and a protective buffer area of 66,300 acres (26,830 ha). The Nesque gorges and the Ventoux summit also benefit from the protection measures implemented within the framework of a Natura 2000 perimeter over an area of 7,760 acres (3,140 ha) and are part of the national green framework decided by the Grenelle de l'Environnement in 2007.
