Reims Cathedral is a highlight of 13th-century Gothic art in Europe. Its nave culminates at 124 ft (38 m), and its two facade towers rise to 267 ft (81.50 m). Some 2,303 statues sprinkle the whole sanctuary, some of them smiling for the first time in Christian iconography. At the top of the cathedral's buttresses, 22 steeples-tabernacles, each inhabited by an angel with outstretched wings, stand guarding the monument dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
