If we think that the exceptionally high level of nickel citrate in the blue-green sap of Pycnandra acuminata could help protect it against herbivores and insects, its hyperaccumulative properties are already used to rid the polluted soils of their toxic compounds by bioremediation. It could also help extract the precious metal compounds from the nutrient-poor but metal-rich soils on which it grows.
