Voted the French people's favorite public State institution, the Conservatoire du Littoral (Coastal Protection Agency) acquired the Domaine du Rayol in 1989. This purchase aimed to maintain its biological, aesthetic, and identity richness and allow public access. Since its creation in 1975, the Conservatoire du Littoral has thus made it possible to preserve 1,255 mi (2,020 km) of coastline, i.e 13% of the 9,624 mi (15,489 km) of French coastline.
