Progressive oxidation of iron
0
0
The progressive drying up of the sands of Vaucluse and their repeated exposure to the rain and the open air in a climate initially tropical and then increasingly drier oxidized the iron they contained. The ochres were colored by a phenomenon of laterization of the soil in hues ranging from yellow to purplish-black through red and all shades of orange. This color palette contrasts with the intense green of the surrounding dense vegetation cover.
