The origin of cider goes back to Antiquity, when apple wine was made. However, its manufacture became notorious in the 12th century after the invention of the press. The Normans today claim the paternity of cider. In the Orne department, the La Galotière estate has been producing apple and pear cider since 1963. Its trees cover 111 acres (45 ha) (106 acres / 43 ha of apple trees and 5 acres / 2 ha of pear trees). The GAEC de La Galotière, certified organic since 2000, also produces Calvados aged over ten years old and Poirés.
