With its massive body and its thick skin, the tapir looks like a pig but its closest relatives are the horse and the rhinoceros. It is famous for its elongated, flexible upper lip that is extended into a short trunk, called proboscis: it allows it to grab foliage that would otherwise be out of reach. Among the 5 species of tapirs recorded in the world, Baird's tapir (Tapirus bairdii), also known as the Central American tapir, is the largest of the 4 species living on the American continent: it can measure up to 2 m (6.6 ft) long, 120 cm (4 ft) at the shoulder and weigh u p to 400 kg (882 lb).
