The construction of Notre-Dame-de-Victoire Chapel and the priory at the top of the Sainte-Victoire mountain was initiated by Father Jean Aubert, master of ceremonies at Saint-Sauveur Church in Aix-en-Provence and director of the Sainte-Victoire brotherhood. His project, dating back to the middle of the 17th century, was largely financed by a wealthy bourgeois from Aix, Honoré Lambert, in gratitude to the Virgin Mary to whom he attributed his miraculous healing. Located at the top of an outcrop of the Sainte-Victoire mountain, the building was visible from afar, and its bells could be heard miles around.
