Hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, la garcilla bueyera —una garza acomodaticia y adaptable— habitaba originalmente en numerosas áreas tropicales y subtropicales de África, pero, a comienzos del pasado siglo, la especie se embarcó en un sorprendente proceso colonizador que todavía persiste y que la ha llevado a convertirse en un ave prácticamente cosmopolita, por lo que actualmente se extiende —después de cruzar océanos y conquistar continentes— desde el sur de Europa hasta Oceanía y desde África hasta Norteamérica.
