Prickly pear flowers
The prickly pear flowers generally appear on the areolas located at the top of the one year old cladodes (flattened stems) or on their most sun-exposed faces. Each areola gives in principle a single yellow or orange flower set with ephemeral leaves characteristic of the species. A fertile cladode can bear up to thirty flowers depending on its position on the plant, its exposure and its nutritional conditions.
