The participants in the javelin throwing contest, 'patia fa', are about to throw their javelins towards the target, a tiny coconut on the top of a mast located 72 feet (22 m) away. They are all standing in a throwing position, the forefinger of their right hand ready to propel the javelin by its base while their left arm, stretched towards the target, serves as a launching pad for their homemade projectile.
