For years, rats have threatened the seabird populations of Ua Hiva bird islets. Their eradication has allowed seabirds to nest again on these now protected sites, to increase their diversity and to protect endangered species such as the Polynesian storm petrel (Pita'e). The population level of 4 landbird and 2 seabird species, all endangered in the Marquesas, has thus been improved.
