The maintenance of the Raivavae Giant clam population is highly dependent on areas where densities and reproductive success are important and which focus the fishing effort, as fishermen inadvertently target the individuals most likely to breed. To ensure the survival of the Giant clam populations, while allowing local fishermen to continue exploiting this resource, breeding shelters are set up and harvest quotas are established.
