Softwoods - here spruces - occupy the mountainous region of Franche-Comté, which has 708,000 hectares of forests made up of 70% of deciduous trees. The region's cover rate is 44% but it reaches 50% for the Jura department which alone has 250,000 hectares of forests, half of which are public state or municipal forests. Franche-Comté is thus the leading French region in terms of forest cover rate and the second in terms of managed area.
