The Louvre’s Department of Works of Art is undoubtedly one of the museum’s most sumptuous as it is regularly enriched by donations. It contains more than 20,000 works of art, 8,500 of which are displayed in a hundred or so rooms such as the Gallery of Apollo. In addition to the Crown Jewels, the gallery also displays a collection of snuffboxes and goblets cut from gems that Louis XIV was very fond of. The jewels are accompanied by beautiful cases made of gold-worked leather. Often shaped like the objects they house (crowns or diadems), they are almost as precious on the outside as the jewels they contain.
