Portraits of an era

The Villa du Temps Retrouvé in Cabourg exhibits a rich collection of portraits from the beginning of the 20th century. Here are two examples with the Portrait of Madame Faure - painted in 1901 by the French painter François Flameng (1856-1923) made famous by his portrait of Victor Hugo - and the Study for the portrait of Bernstein, a playwright friend of Marcel Proust, painted in 1908 by Jacques-Émile Blanche (1861-1942). Born rich, Jacques-Emile Blanche could afford to choose the models for his portraits and immortalize the literary figures of his time, with whom he also had friendly relations. His work as a portraitist depicts the society of his time in the manner of those of writers.
