Portrait of a Woman

Hans Holbein the Elder was a German painter who died in 1524 in Issenheim, Alsace. The Unterlinden Museum bought his “Portrait de femme” (‘Portrait of a Woman’) in 1980. This oil on wood, circa 1515, is the only work by the artist to be kept in a French public collection. In late Gothic style, the small portrait is already marked by the innovations of the Renaissance. The emphasis on the bodice strap is reminiscent of the Gothic artists’ taste for line. But the three-quarter pose and the aesthetic qualities of the portrait refer to the latest developments of the Renaissance, which placed man at the centre of its thinking.
