The population of African elephants (Loxodonta) amounts today to 400,000 or 500,000 individuals, whereas they were still more than 5 million in 1930. Their territories have shrunk and continue to shrink, so that after having completely disappeared from very large areas, the elephants survive today only thanks to the national parks.
