The Explorers
The Explorers
Located in the Coral Sea, the island of Maré had 5,757 inhabitants in 2019, mainly distributed along the north and west coast. Its overwhelmingly Melanesian population (over 97% in 1996) has decreased by 2,000 inhabitants since 2004 due to the strong exodus of young workers to Greater Nouméa. The population density is low with 8.4 inhabitants per km2 and large areas seem totally uninhabited.
