Poppies of Giverny
2
0
The garden of the painter Claude Monet in Giverny, in the Eure, has a wide variety of flowers that follow the seasons. Among them, the poppies (family Papaveraceae) unfurl their four pink or red petals. Their numerous stamens are loaded with nutrients that attract bees. They are native to southern Europe and North Africa. The poppy fruits contain black seeds that are rich in vitamin B1 and calcium. They are used in Central and Eastern Europe and in Alsace to decorate bread, while their subtle taste of hazelnut or toasted pine nut is also appreciated in cooking.
