The polar bear is threatened with extinction in the short term (within a century), partly because of the reduction of its habitat consisting of pack ice and drifting ice sheets used as seal hunting platforms. The global warming responsible for the pack ice's melting and delayed formation shortens its hunting season and prevents it from storing enough fat for winter, thus slowing down its already low reproduction rate with an average of five litters per female.
