Le poisson-ange français nage parmi les coraux et les fonds rocheux qui lui offrent protection et nourriture, généralement entre 5 et 25 m de profondeur. Il est possible de l'observer aussi à des profondeurs plus importantes, au-delà de 30 m, notamment sur des épaves. Il règne, souvent en couple, sur un territoire dont il interdit l'accès à ses congénères.
