In 1974, after ten years of work, the Lac du Der-Chantecoq was completed in the heart of Champagne. Quiet zones have been set up for the 200 bird species identified in its area. The lake is visited by 200.000 to 350.000 common cranes (Grus grus) every year. They come to spend the winter or stop there during their migration to the south. The Lac du Der-Chantecoq is also home to 40 mammal species, 45 varieties of dragonflies, 20 amphibian species, and more than 200 types of vegetals.
