In the heart of the former mining valley of Val d'Argent, the Tellure park in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines recounts the life of medieval and Renaissance miners. After a first wave of silver digging in the Altenberg mountain, they started exploiting the Neuenberg massif after the Saint-Jean vein's discovery in 1549. It contained lead loaded with silver that miners learned to extract thanks to innovative techniques from Saxony and Bohemia. It is estimated that approximately 3,300 lbs (1,500 kg) of silver were mined there every year.
