The reef flat is the upper part of a coral reef which appears along the coast behind the wave breaking zone. On the island of Maré in the Loyalty archipelago, it punctually takes the form of platforms arranged in superimposed terraces of various widths and thicknesses regularly submerged and infiltrated by the ocean. They result from the combination of tectono-eustatic processes.
