The plateaus, hills and valleys cover a third of the surface of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence but are home to two thirds of its population and almost all of its economic activity, excluding mountain tourism. The rural exodus of the 19th and 20th centuries however led to the disappearance of many municipalities, the number of which has dropped from 256 in 1854 to 198 today.
