The central plateau of Maré Island rises to 164-196ft (50-60m) above sea level. It represents 90% of the island's surface area i.e approximately 358sqmi (577km2) out of 403sqmi (650km2). It is covered with a dense forest which occupies 269sqmi (433km2) of the island. A vestige of the now emerged former lagoon, it is surrounded by a peripheral crown which corresponds to the former reef barrier and alternates steep cliffs and localized beaches.
