Contrary to appearances, coral is not a plant but an animal of the cnidarian family living mostly in colonies and in symbiosis with microscopic algae which provide nutrients and oxygen through photosynthesis. Corals make a skeleton of calcium carbonate, whose structure is called polypier and whose accumulation can lead to the formation of a barrier.
