To each geological context corresponds a particular type of oceanic substrate providing a variety of environments and original habitats for the development of deep ecosystems. Thus the Loyalty Islands are surrounded to the north and to the south by monotonous flat sediments which represent about 40% of the New Caledonian maritime space. These plains are characterized by a low biomass and a rare megafauna.
