65% of the territory of Honduras is occupied by the mountains of the three cordilleras which give way to coastal plains to the north and south of the country. The Central American Cordillera also divides the territory into three zones, from east to west. The northern coastal plain stretches over 416mi (670km) and occupies 16% of the national territory, it is the most productive agricultural area in the country while the southern one, more reduced, is mainly covered with mangroves.
