In addition to its beaches and film festival, Deauville is renowned as a city of horses. It is said that the Duke of Morny had the racetrack built before the church. The site welcomes races all year round, and its Grands Prix (Rothschild, Morny, Deauville, etc.) have earned it its 4 Saisons (Four Seasons) nickname. It covers 163 acres (66 ha) of dry marshes and welcomed its first races in 1864. A pavilion was added to the south in 1880 and another building in 1913. The stands from the Second Empire were rebuilt in 1919 and can accommodate 2,000 enthusiasts.
