The white sandy beaches of the Raivavae motu are not lined with coconut trees, but with aito or ironwood (Casuarina Equisetifolia), considered native in Eastern Polynesia. This red-brown barked tree with very small leafy branches can reach more than 98.4ft (30m) high. It is found in all the archipelagos, mainly in the littoral zones, and in the high islands up to 2296ft (700m).
