Place Vendôme for ever

The Place Vendôme owes its name to the Hôtel de Vendôme. In 1561, Antoine Gondi had a mansion built for his family at the corner of the Rue Saint-Honoré. In 1623, by chance of sale and inheritance, the mansion came into the family of Duke César de Vendôme, who preferred to reside in his castle on the Loire. In 1685, Louis XIV bought the Hôtel de Vendôme and commissioned Jules Hardouin-Mansart to demolish it in order to build the Place des Conquêtes, which was completed in 1720. An imposing equestrian statue of Louis XIV was placed in the centre. Renamed Place Louis-le-Grand by Louis XV, it became Place Vendôme during the Revolution.
