In Pont-Audemer, the Place de la Ville street is unique. Two typical Norman houses meet above the alley, forming a corridor. In the Middle Ages, property taxes already existed, and were calculated based on a house’s ground surface area, which inhabitants found a way to increase by adding corbels, which in this narrow street are so close they touch.
