Renamed Place Charles-de-Gaulle in November 1970, the square is frequently referred to by its former name of Place de l’Etoile. Known worldwide for the Arc de Triomphe, this circular square closes the upper part of the Avenue des Champs-Elysées. Divided between the 8th, 16th, and 17th arrondissements, the square is at the heart of a star formed by twelve prestigious avenues named after great men and battles won by Napoleon I. Five of these avenues were laid out by the architect Gabriel between 1768 and 1774, and the earth removed during the work was used to fill in the Champs-Elysées. The other seven avenues were laid out by Baron Haussmann.
