The Laricio pine is an endemic species which grows in the wild only in Corsica. An emblematic tree of the island, it has been used since ancient times for ship masts and carpentry because of its high resistance to fire. It grows from 3937 to 4921ft (1200-1500m) on the poor soils of the mountainous slopes and can live 500 years. Its straight and slender trunk can reach 164ft (50m) in height and 6.5ft (2m) in diameter.
