Columnar pines and coconut palms
1
0
In this photo, columnar pines and coconut palms rub shoulders, recalling the most common Kanak metaphor to affirm the genders' otherness and complementarity. The dominant pine standing straight up to the sky refers to the chief and the male sphere ; the coconut palm whose palms fall towards the ground is the servant. It is associated with land, women, food. In New Caledonia, this gender classification is omnipresent, everything is male or female, whether in nature, home or social organization.
