Columnar pines (Araucaria columnaris) are endemic to New Caledonia where they grow naturally in open, sunny areas exposed to the prevailing winds. They are found on the mining soils (peridotites) of southern Grande-Terre and the Isle of Pines as well as on the limestone soils of the Loyalty Islands.
