Flor: Corola regular (actinomorfa), en forma de rueda, rojo ladrillo o algunas veces azul , de 8–14 mm (0,3–0,6 pulg.) de ancho , fusionada, con 5 lóbulos (profundos). Cáliz lobulado hasta la base, lóbulos angostos con puntas cónicas. Cinco estambres. Gineceo fusionado, con un solo estilo. Flores generalmente en pares axilares.
Habita en terrenos cultivados, zonas baldías y dunas en toda Europa. En el centro de España aparece en comunidades de Polygono-Chenopodion Koch ex Sissing (1946), y es protegida como especie vulnerable en la Región de Murcia (España).
Usado popularmente como antifúngico, antiviral, cicatrizante, sedante, expectorante, ligeramente diurético y sudorífico. Por su toxicidad por vía interna, sólo se recomienda su uso tópico en micosis cutáneas, úlceras tróficas y herpes zóster.
