The vertiginous basalt peaks in the form of sugar loaf of Ua Pou island have earned it the nickname of 'cathedral island'. According to the legend, they are the pillars of the 'Big House', the first elements erected by the gods during the creation of the 'Earth of Men', the former name of the Marquesas. The highest, Mount Oave, rises to 4107 feet (1252 m).
