In geology, several terms refer to rock formations rising from the ground. We can talk of pillars, needles, pinnacles, or even stacks when they originate from marine erosion. The differences are subtle: the needle has a pointed shape, unlike the pillar, while the pinnacle more generally designates a peak, that is to say a rocky protrusion, pointed or not.
